With a group exhibition composed of artists most of whom have recently joined the gallery, CDA-Projects is opening up for the new season. Artists of the exhibition are integrating their peculiar artistic languages with their again peculiar, “original” stories and approaches. Hosting different materials from installations to photographs, videos to wall application, the exhibition provides the freedom and the polyphony to “tell” of diverse things side-by-side.

Selçuk Artut, Janet Bellotto, Burçak Bingöl, Elif Varol Ergen, Zeren Göktan, Zeynep Kayan, Nazlı Eda Noyan, Funda Susamoğlu

UNCANNY ENCOUNTERS

UNCANNY ENCOUNTERS

Silva Bingaz, Banu Cennetoğlu, Çınar Eslek, Zeren Göktan, Zeynep Kayan, Melisa Önel

“Uncanny” (Unheimlich) is a concept employed mainly in art and philosophy to describe the unsettling feeling evoked by something that is strange and foreign, yet astonishingly close and familiar at the same time. Uncanniness has ties to a peculiar sense of “déjà vu,” and implies the unpredictable, the unexpected, the unclear, the recalled, and the uncertain. The first encounter with a photograph generates an uncanny feeling. Certain photographs also present a subject, object, or form which can be uncanny, and the photographer’s own approach may render the visual outcome uncanny. If so, does the fact that some photographs strike us as remote or close have something to do with the unconscious? If a photograph can express different meanings to the photographer and to the viewer, how can it be related to the individual memory?

When she looked up at me, her hair was in her face. I pushed it back with my hands and it was wet too but not from outside but from crying. I picked up a tear on my finger and put it in my eyes.

Friends are usually the best to rely on what to read. When I was five I killed myself is one of those books, i took the advise and surprise, surprise, again it all was true : i loved it. Burt, an 8 year-old boy’s pure love story you get to know little by little. Feels like something you know very well, but then it shakes you with its weird intensity. Below is the famous Oh Mr. Moon’s lyrics that Burt remembers from his music lesson at school.

Oh Mr Moon, Moon
Bright and Silvery Moon
Won’t you please shine down on me.
Oh Mr Moon, Moon
Bright and Silvery Moon
I’m as blue as I can be

EXISTRONG is an exhibition that reaches beyond what we see around, focusing on the individual and the compromises he/she makes in his/her mind and feeds upon directly from this area. This way, it visualizes the unique life experience of the humankind intertwined with mistakes, defects, worries and most important of all, a great sense of excitement. It opens this private area to be shared with sincerity.
All these works are shaped with the life experiences and devices of the artists who look, see and process what they are seeing. The images that have been created are posed so that it is projected on the layout of the CDA-Projects Gallery, consisting of two rooms and a hall.

ARTISTS: Selçuk Artut, Dağhan Celayir, Gabriel Jones, Zeynep Kayan, Nazlı Eda Noyan, Civan Özkanoğlu

”…John Berger traces in words, moments lived in Europe at the end of the millenium. These moments are not fiction. They happened.” writes, at the back of Photocopies. To tell the truth, it did take me some time to believe in that, till i come across with this one story titled : ” A friend talking (for Guzine) “. For who is the beloved wife of Abidin Dino, Abidine in Berger’s own words. Below, is a part from this short story:

Any image which comes to me about him when alive inevitably includes roads, caravanserai voyages. He had a traveller’s vigilance. As Saadi, the Persian wrote: ” He who sleeps on the Road will lose either his hat or his head “.

For rather than asking how and by whose hand the work of art was made, the question becomes: How did this object come to be here? Intimate Life, famous for Nan Goldin, established with Ryan McGinley, claimed to give a sense of liberation in the sense that the persona of the photographer being bound up in the description of his or her life rather than in more stereotypical notions of age and gender with which other practice often deals. Moments in History is kind of a post-modern approach to documentary photography; that rather than being caught up in the chaotic midst of an event, or at close quarters to individual pain and suffering, photographers choose instead to represent what is left behind in the wake of such tragedies. Revived and Remade starts with Untitled Film Stills of Cindy Sherman and finalizes the book and itself with the following: ..the possibilities that postmodernist practice represents for contemporary art photographers: to be able to knowingly shape the subjects that intrigue them, conscious of the heritage of the imagery into which they are entering, and to see the contemporary world through the pictures we already know.
